My Dad as a young man (he’s the young man). Those are his parents on either side of him.
- I am only 75-80% certain that the young man in the photo is my Dad. The dates line up. I talked to my Dad this afternoon and forgot to ask him whether this was him. He has said in the past that he has never been to New York City, but I’ve noticed that people older than 40 or so don’t normally include childhood trips when they talk about where they’ve been unless it’s somewhere really exotic. My Dad is also only 5-6 years old here, so maybe he periodically forgets about the trip (or maybe it was really traumatizing). He doesn’t know that I have this photo.
- My grandfather’s hat. I can remember seeing that around my grandparent’s apartment before he died. I wish I had asked for it or, failing that, stolen it.
- My grandfather’s almost imperceptible moustache.
- My grandmother: yeah, that’s pretty much what she looked like.
- I have no idea who the other two guys are. I have a whole box of family photos from this era and neither of these guys are in any of them. I assume this to be some kind of ‘old country’ characteristic: like that they were some cousin of ours from the old country who went to New York, or some friend of a friend from the community of old country people in Toronto.
- I don’t have a scanner and spent at least 15 minutes across two applications trying to stabilize the iPhone’s camera in order to get a decent, non-blurry shot. This was the best one, and I think it’s passable. More importantly, I ended up having a lot of time to scrutinize the photo, for which I’m now thankful.
Happy Father’s Day!
